Premier Player of the Week:
Nicholas Samson – Northern Colorado Eagles – Mountain Division
The Northern Colorado Eagles kicked off their first USPHL season with a dominating performance against the always difficult Ogden Mustangs. The Eagles outscored the Mustangs, 10-2 over the three
day stretch, jumping out to the early division lead and putting themselves into contention for a Top Ten
spot in The Dan K Show’s first Premier Power Rankings.
Leading the way for the Eagles, our Player of the Week Nicholas Samson did it all in a
Thanos-style weekend; perfectly balanced (yes, this article is written by Dan K and somehow approved
by Lucas) Samson, notched 3 goals, 3 assists, 1 powerplay goal, 1 powerplay assist and 1 game-winner
tallying two points per game in each of his contest.
This 2002 birth year has a ton of upside in his playing style, mixing skill with an ability to bring physicality
to the ice week in and week out. Samson should be in the running for many more Player of the Week
accolades as the season wears on.
It is always difficult to pick just one Player of the Week for the Premier, so a
shout out is necessary for some of our other Top Performers. Tying Samson for the league lead in points
were three other Premier skaters that posted 6 point weekends. NCDC draft pick and absolute
superstar Stanley Lucas started strong with 3 goals and 3 assists over just 2 games while his teammate
Aaron Frenkel found the 6 point mark by notching 2 goals and 4 assists. Samson’s Eagles teammate
Brennan McFarland reached the 6 point mark in true Beatles fashion, providing a little help to his
friends, with a 1 goal 5 assist weekend.
In net, the entire Rush organization pulled off the opening weekend shutout. Keeping
their opponent off the board for the first 120 minutes of the season was made easier by impeccable
performances by David Battisti and Tripp Clarke. As Dan K stated on The Dan K Show this week, “this
team is a wagon that may never give up a goal this season with these guys in net!”
Elite Player of the Week:
Chase Williams – Carolina Junior Hurricanes – Southeast Division
When you post a hat trick against one of the best organizations in Junior Hockey to grab a huge road
“DubYa” on Opening Weekend, you tend to grab a Player of the Week award or two. Chase Williams of
the Carolina Junior Hurricanes did just that, posting a hat trick in a 4-3 victory Sunday over the Hampton
Roads Whalers. If scouts haven’t watched this 2003 RW yet, they are missing out! Williams combines
all the raw skills you expect in a successful winger and will have an amazing opportunity to develop with
the great staff in Carolina. We will be on the lookout for many more lost hats in Carolina.
Evan Miles always goes the extra miles for the Hampton Roads Whalers and did
so again this weekend with two incredibly hard-fought scores. The entire Tampa Bay Juniors roster also
gets an Honorable Mention after showing they may just be the Kings of Florida this season, lead by the
ultimate “Rula” Ryan Bahula, who posted 4 goals in 2 games.
Arley Cutler (Charlotte Rush), Ty Morton (Hampton Roads Whalers) and Larkin Dolan (Charleston
Colonials) were the first to find the Golden Goose Eggs in net this season, each posting a shutout this
weekend. These three net minders will be a handful for offenses all season long and should be on
everyone’s radar nationwide.
